Map Location – Gilead

gilead map

Balm of Gilead was a rare perfume named for the region where it was produced — Gilead, a highlands region east of the Jordan River, today in northwestern Jordan, extending from the southern end of The Sea Of Galilee to the northern end of The Dead Sea.

Gilead was a mountainous region east of the Jordan River divided among the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh, and situated in Jordan. It is also referred to by the Aramaic name Yegar-Sahadutha, which carries the same meaning as the Hebrew Gileed, namely: “heap [of stones] of testimony” (Genesis 31:47-48).From its mountainous character, it is called the mount of Gilead (Genesis 31:25). It was used more generally for the entire region east of the Jordan River.

It was bounded on the north by Bashan, and on the south by Moab and Ammon (Genesis 31:21; Deuteronomy 3:12–17).

Inductive Bible Study Method is an approach to God’s Word focusing on three basic steps that move from a focus on specific details to a more general, universal principle. Through these three steps, we apply inductive reasoning, which is defined as the attempt to use information about a specific situation to draw a conclusion. The steps are observation (what does it say?), interpretation (what does it mean?), and application (what does it mean for my life?). Inductive Bible study is a valuable tool in understanding and applying the principles of God’s Word.

Help from a Band of Outsiders – Faithfulness, Peace, Benevolence, Healing for One Another

In a jealous plot, Joseph’s brothers kidnapped him and threw him in a deep well with no water to drink. Then, unbelievably, the brothers went about their business as usual, even after this murderous act. Ignored by his brothers, Joseph reached out in prayer to God. God heard Joseph’s cries for help and sent a band of outsiders (how sad that this is often the case) to rescue Joseph from certain death. For, as the Balm passed by, Judah declared to his brothers that it would be better to sell Joseph into slavery than to kill him.  For twenty shekels. Verses 26 & 27.   A Word through Terry Jo Cotter

So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the long robe with sleeves that he wore [Coat Of Many Colors]; and they took him and cast him into a pit. The pit was empty, there was no water in it. Then they sat down to eat; and looking up they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites (descendants of Hagar, Abraham and Sarah’s maid; name means “God will hear”) coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing gum, balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry it down to Egypt. Then Judah said to his brothers [Children of Jacob], “What profit is it if we slay our brother and conceal his blood? Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother, our own flesh.” And his brothers heeded him. Then Midianite traders passed by; and they drew Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver; and they took Joseph to Egypt.” (Genesis 37:23-28 RSV)

Thus, the first application of the Balm of Gilead.

Living Gilead.

2.  How to become a living Balm of Gilead used for healing others;

religion-3450127_960_720

Why was that Balm of Gilead of such great value?

The value was Joseph himself, a beloved son, as the healing balm of Gilead personified through his life, having been being sold into slavery in Egypt. Joseph [a representative type of Christ] was a living Balm of Gilead. He was the one the Lord would use to save –not only the people of Egypt and the surrounding nations– but the very Covenant bloodline itself.

Beloved, you and I are called to be a living Balm of Gilead, to each other; to those who follow after us; to the hurting nations. To truly be a balm that can bring healing, we must be taken from one form to another, in order to flow out to others.

It is because of what we have endured that we can say, “Come, drink of the healing medicines that now flow.” We are becoming a Balm of Gilead personified, just as Joseph before us.

A Word through Terry Jo Cotter

This is a living Balm of Gilead:  the willingness to allow ourselves to be offered as a spiritual balm for the good and healing of others.

Jesus Physician.

3.  Why Jesus called himself a doctor and a physician;

PLASTER verse

Jesus identified as Healer.  This is why he referred to himself as a “physician” or “doctor,” once in the sense of “spiritual healer” and once in the sense of “physical healer.”

“It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” (Mark 2:17)

“Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself! ” (Luke 4:23)

Jesus heals. He is the Great Physician, the Balm of Gilead.

Divine Diploma.

4.  Faithful endurance through challenges can become our Divine Diploma of healing;

OIL OF JOY

Christ has the best authority for practicing as a Physician. He has a divine diploma. Would you like a healing diploma? It comes from the highest authority, not from the College of Physicians, but from the God of Physicians. Here are the words of Jesus’s Divine healing appointment in the sixty-first chapter of Isaiah. “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek. He hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted.” His cures are radical — he strikes at the very centre of the disease, and hence his cures are sure. He never fails. He loves to save. He can save the vilest. No one reached out to the lepers, but the Great Physician did. Jesus came to the sick and needy, not those who were well.

Jeremiah 8:22 ESV

“Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there?”

Psalm 147:3 ESV

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”

Jeremiah 33:6 ESV

“Behold, I will bring to it health and healing, and I will heal them and reveal to them abundance of prosperity and security.”

Jesus Healed.

GALILEE PNG

Jesus heals in the Gilead District on the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee.

Jesus and his disciples were confronted with a life-threatening storm as they crossed the Sea of Galilee to come to it’s eastern shore. He landed in the Gentile region, near the town of Gadarene in the highland District of Gilead. When He and his disciples make shore they immediately confronted a man with demonic spirits named “Legion.” Jesus healed this man by casting out the demons into a herd of swine, which then hurled themselves into the sea.  (Matthew 8:28-34) “And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.”  Mark 5:20 (KJV)

“Oceans” by Hillsong United recorded this version of this song, live on the Sea of Galilee. “Let me walk upon the waters wherever You would call me” sung on the very water that Jesus walked on and called Peter out of the boat.

“Your Grace abounds in deepest waters..”

The Ten Cities of Gilead District, known as Decapolis & The Healing Ministry of Jesus.

“Large crowds followed Him from Galilee and the Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and from beyond the Jordan.” (Matthew 4:24-25 NIV)

Jesus cured a man of deafness in Gilead district Decapolis:
“Again He went out from the region of Tyre, and came through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, within the region of Decapolis. (in district of Gilead) They brought to Him one who was deaf and spoke with difficulty, and they implored Him to lay His hand on him.” (Mark 7:31-35 NIV) Bethsaida is described in Mark 8 as a town (Greek: κώμη) where Jesus met the Blind man of Bethsaida.

Feeding the multitude and healing their sick in Bethsaida, in the land of Gilead – When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” Jesus said that they did not need to go away, and therefore the disciples were to give them something to eat. They said that they only had five loaves and two fish, which Jesus asked be brought to him. The number of those who ate was four thousand men, besides women and children. Gospel of Matthew.

Bees Gilead.

7.  How tiny bees use the Balm of Gilead in EVERY honey hive;

nature-3222397_960_720

bee-1300200_960_720Creation Care:  Balm of Gilead is made from Balsam Poplar [Cottonwood] resin, which is also a component in “bee glue” or ‘bee penicillin’ called propolis. This Balm of Gilead resin is gathered by bees to make propolis to seal, coat and protect their bee hives from microbes. The bulk of propolis is obtained from the barks of poplars. Poplar bud resin is often 50% of the  ingredients in bee propolis. This poplar [cottonwood]  ‘bee glue’ ‘bee penicillin’ propolis, which is 50% poplar Balm of Gilead resin, prevents diseases and parasites from entering the hive, and inhibits fungal and bacterial growth.   In general, raw propolis is composed of around 50% resins, 30% waxes, 10% essential oils, 5% pollen, and 5% of various organic compounds.  To make ‘bee penicillin’, bees mix the collected Balm of Gilead resin in a propolis composition of about 50% resin with the other 50% combined of wax, honey, and enzymes from their stomachs.
